New York City Trip

Summer is getting to its end unfortunately but it is not too late to plan one last weekend (maybe Labor day weekend?!) getaway.

Recently, my family and I went to New York City and as usual the big apple impressed us a lot. This city welcomes so many tourists from around the world and it is a popular vacation destination for many Montrealers so I’ve decided to share a post about what to do, see and eat in Manhattan. Don’t hesitate to comment and to let me know what I should see in New York City next time.

What to do…

1 One obvious (but worth it) thing to do is to walk through Times Square. Being surrounded by all those billboards, huge shops and lights is mesmerizing and impressive!

2 Taking the subway in Manhattan is a great way to get around the different neighborhoods. I took it from Times Square to Wall Street (there’s air conditioning!) When you arrive at Wall Street, you’re in the heart of the Financial District! This district has beautiful architecture, nice streets and cute restaurants. Go by Pearl Street to see a pedestrian street with many restaurants’ patios.

3 During my trip, I went to the grand opening of the Westfield World Trade Center in the Financial District next to the memorial site. This huge and nicely built center is a big mall with famous and fancy shops. For the opening, many shops gave freebies and gifts to welcome new guests. This mall is absolutely worth a visit. Don’t forget to check Eataly, an italian marketplace with restaurants, bakery, grocery store and cooking classes. It is so beautiful! Also, check out the beautiful 9/11 memorial site.

4 Remember the hotel in Home Alone? It is The Plaza Fairmount hotel. It is a beautiful 5-star hotel in the Upper Side of New York and it is worth seeing. The building is so royal and grandiose. The entrance with the big chandelier, the tropical chic breakfast place and the big doors give this place a luxurious feel. Enter the hotel and go towards the basement (lower level); you will find many cute and chic foodstands and cafés serving lunch. The foodcourt is open to everyone.

5 A stroll in lovely central park is always pleasant. This park is so big and there are many things to see. You can just relax, read or walk around! Exit on the West side and go on Amsterdam Street to grab a drink afterwards!

6 My favourite parts of the city: Greenwich, Soho, Tribecca. The downtown area has plenty of trendy bars, unique shops, cute cafés and gastronomic restaurants. Soho has many well-known and chic boutiques.

7 Bryant Park in the summer is beautiful at night! There are some seats in the park and they play movies at night!

Where to eat…

1 Osteria al Doge. 142 W 44th Street. Nice casual italian pastas and pizzas in Times Square. Very busy before Broadway shows. I loved their different kinds of bread served with oil and the complimentary dessert. I had a delicious plate of linguini fruti di mare (seafood linguini).

2 Carroll Place. 157 Bleecker St, Greenwich Village. This is an Italian American winebar and gastropub. We went there for happy hour and we enjoyed the rustic vibe, the ambiance, the beer and the pizza. Some beers are half price for happy hour and the margherita pizza was 5$ (delicious!!)

3 Toro. 85 10th Ave. This trendy spanish tapas restaurant is located near the High Line and offers traditional and modern small plates in a very trendy setting. Food is exquisite and it is fun to share the different plates amongst guests. A must!

4 Joe’s Bar. 480 Amsterdam Ave, Upper West Side. This laid-back bar offers delicious cocktails and beers! Their fries are also pretty good!

5 Annabel. 809 9th Ave. This casual chic restaurant is perfect for a date or a family dinner. Their appetizer menu is large and they offer wood-fired pizzas with gourmet toppings and pasta dishes. Try the tomato burrata and the padron peppers as appetizers!

Of course, there is much more to do in New York City but those are some ideas!
